Kelly Hansmann is the force behind Protea. With an innate love of nature and a degree in Statistics, the North Carolina native came to San Francisco looking for balance between work and play. She enrolled at Apparel Arts, indulging a life-long interest in fashion design. Soon after graduating, the quirky dreamer left behind her life in business consulting to create Protea, a brand inspired by the curiously beautiful. Now her work and play are one.
Her design philosophy echoes nature by mixing deceptively simple designs and luxurious fabrics. She often combines draping and French pattern making methods for a refreshingly modern effect. Each piece must feel amazing to the touch, and hang beautifully on the body. Sometimes soft, sometimes bold, subtly sexy and always beautiful.
In her San Francisco studio, Kelly designs each garment for her customers to treasure for years to come. The locally produced collection is made in limited quantities by a team of seamstresses who take great pride in their work.
